Hello and welcome! My name is Sarah Higgins and I provide counseling and psychotherapy services to children, adolescents, and adults in the Richmond area. I am a Commonwealth of Virginia Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and an Advanced Certified Trauma Practitioner (ACTP).
I specialize in treating victims and witnesses of trauma, but I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients who need help managing feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as children and adolescents struggling with emotional and behavioral disorders, and those that are on the Autism Spectrum. Having completed extensive training in both play therapy and expressive based therapies, I often incorporate those techniques when working with clients. In addition, I worked many years in Title 1 schools, and am also very familiar with the unique challenging role of a school social worker.
I truly believe that good clinical supervision can make or break a clinician and I was lucky to have several supportive supervisors behind me in the beginning of my career. I am committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for my supervisees. I heavily focus on supporting clinicians in not only their clinical skills but their development of a consistent and manageable self-care plan to help in preventing the development of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and related conditions.
